The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an FCC program to help households struggling to pay for internet service during the pandemic. This new benefit will connect eligible households to jobs, critical healthcare services, and virtual classrooms.

On February 25, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) unanimously adopted a Report and Order that established the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) Program, a $3.2 billion federal initiative to help lower the cost of high-speed internet for eligible households during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

The EBB program will provide:

  • Up to $50/month discount for broadband services
  • Up to $75/month discount for broadband services for households on Tribal lands and
  • A one-time discount of up to $100 for a computer ( laptop, desktop, or tablet) purchased through a participating provider
  • The Emergency Broadband Benefit is limited to one monthly service discount and one device discount per eligible household

  1. The problem is not paying for the internet access. The problem is that there is no actual high speed internet in many areas of Livingston parish including my area. Hughes net and Viasat are not high speed internet no matter what they claim to be. This results in paying a $200 bill for a connection that is worse than the internet I get on my cell phone. Good spectrum internet is like $80 a month. My sister pays $60 a month for Eatel fiber optic but she lives right of a state highway. That’s what we need. Funds would be better spent on getting the infrastructure in place so people off of the main roads can pay for their own internet instead of subsidizing the garbage that we do have access to.
